Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

What is PRP

Platelet rich plasma or, “PRP” is a biologically active product derived from the patient’s blood. Platelets are small pseudo-cells, which do not contain genetic material or typical cell machinery and are abundant in the blood, typically ranging from ~150,000 – 400,000 per microliter. They exist in the blood to help produce clots where active bleeding occurs (e.g. cuts) and are essential in setting the stage for the wound recovery and repair process. Platelets are loaded with biologically active proteins which when released, stimulate cells in the surrounding tissue to respond. Amongst the biologically active proteins released by platelets are growth factors, which are important in cell recruitment to the area, proliferation (dividing to populate the area) and reparative activity.

In PRP, the biologically active components of platelets are utilized by isolating and concentrating the platelets in plasma. Hence the name, “platelet-rich plasma”!

Creating PRP is a minimally invasive and time economical process. Initially, a small portion of blood is collected from the patient then, centrifuged (increase gravitational force on the blood) for several minutes. This allows the separation of platelets from white and red blood cells. The platelet fraction (the plasma) is collected, the platelets are further concentrated and there you have it, PRP! Depending on your procedure, the practitioner will use your PRP for topical applications or, injected where required.

In the aesthetics field the most common use of PRP therapy is for the rejuvenation of skin after a laser treatment or for the stimulation of hair growth for people who have hair loss.  More recently, platelets have been found to be helpful for treating erectile dysfunction, and Peyronie’s disease, stress urinary incontinence through a treatment called P-shot or Priapus Shot

What is our experience with PRP?

At Elite Body & Med Spa our dual board-certified surgeon, Dr Jeffrey Donner, has been working with Platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy  for 10+ years, and is a certified p-shot provider Our sister company has been involved in research and development of stem cells and PRP and has developed intellectual property in stem cell harvesting and PRP processing using some of the most advanced techniques available.

What is a Priapus or P-shot?

The P-shot or Priapus shot as it is sometimes called, is the use of PRP for urological conditions. In the application of the PRP for the P-shot, is a common treatment used for erectile dysfunction. Platelets or PRP are collected from the patient. The penis is numbed with a powerful topical numbing cream so that the patient does not experience any pain. The PRP is then injected at key points along the shaft of the penis or the scar tissues in the case of Peyronie’s. The platelets and stem cells found in concentrated PRP trigger natural healing and can often lead to:
